Total Communication Approach

Amy is the Speech and Language Therapist at Belmont School, with over 10 years' experience of working as a therapist within special education needs schools. She is passionate about making sure every child can communicate in a way that works for them. Amy leads how we support communication across the school, including developing strategies, training staff, and working with families. Amy has embedded our Total Communication approach, which means we encourage and support the use of signing, symbols and AAC devices. She works closely with school staff and families and always takes a neuroaffirming approach—celebrating and respecting the way each child communicates—so every pupil feels understood and included.

Warren is our C&I Support at Belmont School, with a special focus on AAC. He joined the role in September 2024 and has been helping to make sure every child has the tools and support they need to communicate effectively. Before taking on this role, Warren was a Learning Partner in class, so he understands how communication works in real classroom settings. He also has a background in IT, which means he’s great at supporting staff with AAC technology.
Warren helps staff and pupils use AAC—especially Grid software—throughout the day. He’s also developing the use of Grid on large screens to make communication more visible and interactive for whole-class learning.
Warren is passionate about helping both staff and families feel confident using AAC so that pupils experience the same support and communication at home and at school.
